I don’t think I have specifically talked about the importance of regular grooming for our dogs.
This came about as I was invited into a hand stripping FB group, where people can share and learn the dying art of hand stripping. With that said, it is important to note, only certain breeds are hand stripped, Russell’s are one of those breeds.
I have been hand stripping and grooming my own dogs for over 25 years now and I tend to take for granted this skill. It is often brought to my attention when I have clients ask me for a referral to a groomer.
Now, I will add-in, I see nothing wrong with using a groomer, please do not take todays message that way.
What I do want to bring to your attention is the in-between times (your groomer with thank you).
BRUSH
I highly recommend brushing your dog at least weekly. This is an excellent practice to help keep the coat in top shape and keeps them conditioned to being handled. Which is ever so important when they actually do go to the groomer.
To make it easier on my back, I do use a grooming table. If you don’t have one, place a towel or bath rug (helps with traction) onto a table or bench to raise your dog up. Remember if your dog is not used to being up high, use cookies and teach your dog about being up there PRIOR to grooming. If you decide to add a grooming table to your home, make sure to get the right size for your dog. In many cases, you can find a good table under $100 to get you started.
TOES
Now, if you are feeling adventuresome, I also recommend toenail trimming and teeth brushing at home.
My favorite tool for toes is a cordless Dremel with a diamond bit. I personally like these the best for my dogs. This can take a little time to get your dog used to the vibration, but all in all, I find these safer to use than regular cutters.
It is important to note, there are many “dog brands” on the market, I have tried a few of these over the years, I always come back to my Dremel (which is the non-dog version…which is stronger).
TEETH
As for brushing their teeth…. well you know I am an oil gal!
I like to put a couple of drops of On Guard Essential Oil on a gauze pad with some unrefined coconut oil and rub the teeth and gums. This is super simple, and my dogs do better with this than going at them with a toothbrush.
It is important to note, human toothpaste should NEVER be used with our dogs, almost every brand has xylitol in it which is toxic to dogs.

If you are looking to condition your dog’s coat, you can make a DIY coat spray. I like to use this spray, especially on my border collie Reason as she has a longer coat and tends to get knots.
This spray will do more than detangle, it will also help keep the bugs away!

Doggy Detangler
20 drops doTERRA Lavender Essential Oil
20 drops doTERRA Cedarwood Essential Oil
20 drops doTERRA Rosemary Essential Oil
20 drops doTERRA Geranium Essential Oil
2 teaspoons your favorite conditioner (I use doTERRA Salon Essentials Smoothing Conditioner)
2oz unscented Witch Hazel
Add all ingredients to an 8oz spray bottle and top with water. Shake well before each use. I like to use this every couple of days to help keep the tangles out.
I hope this gives you a little courage to take on regular care for your dog's coat, toes, and teeth. Regular care with help keep them healthier longer.
